Dragon & Faerie in the Making
LIST OF TUTORIALS
DRAGON & FAERIE
BUTTERFLY WINGS
I found this sizable rock in my garden which fitted nicely into the palm of my hand, it seemed to speak to me like it was telling me something, I found out later when I cleaned it up & put it in my work area that it was the ideal size & shape for the Dragon that was about to bust forth from the studio ... so the process had begun.
The Wire Dragon was formed over the rock and
then covered with masking tape & head positioned.
the tail draped over the rock
Rock is covered in Plastic Wrap
Glass 8 mm Teddy Bear eyes have been used & clay added to form the head & thicker areas of the body & baked.
Create a hole for the wing wires to be inserted on both sides of the upper body. Then baked at this stage for ease of sculpting so the other clay can be added without fear of destroying the work that has been done so far.
Ahh!! she sits nicely in place.
The lines on the chest are created by adding a length of rolled out clay & lines pressed in the unbaked clay ... then baked. Claws & Dorsal Spine is added at this stage ... then baked. Now we go on to do the scales this part I like as they add texture, a lot of patients is required but so worth the time & effort. Also a tooth is positioned either side of his lower jaw.
The body scales are put on first & then baked, the tail & lower legs are the last to do.
Cavity has been created for head fins.
Bald Spot hmmmmm!!!   nearly finished the scales. To achieve this look small pieces of clay have been rolled into little balls & pressed onto the baked clay.
Smoothing oil on a small brush or on the finger tip has been done prior to each bake. A hole is created at the tip of the tail to insert the tail fin wire.
Now we are ready to add some color ... of which I have used Artist's Pigment Ink (Art Spectrum) diluted with water. The Dragon has been done in a wash of white, repeatedly until the desired look is achieved, (allow to dry between coats) & a wash of diluted blue around his mussel, dorsal fins & claws. Also diluted orange around his eyes & to other chosen areas. Allow to dry & repeat in areas for denser coloration.
I used Fantasy Film & wire to create the wings & fins.
Faerie sculpted on a length of taped wire. Leaving the wire long for holding purposes. It can be cut off later.
Mohair was used for the Healing Faeries Hair with specks of Glistening Glitter and tiny Glass Beads created her pony tail hair tie.
Fantasy Film, Wire & Gauze for the Wings.
Segments of Lace & Gauze for her Designer Gown.
Her Head Dress made of Gauze with specks of Glistening Glitter.
and her tiny Faerie Slippers of Gauze & Glistening Glitter.
BUTTERFLY WINGS
PRODUCTS USED TO SEAL & PROTECT THESE REAL BUTTERFLY WINGS
Spray Matt Varnish
Rimmel Lasting Finish Clear Nail Varnish
Fabric Glue
Coloured Jewellery Wire
Pointy Nose Jewellery Pliers
Tweezers
The Wings are separated but kept in pairs L/R side.
Then given a light spray of matt varnish on all sides.
Make sure they are thoroughly dried before laying down.
a hair drier can be used on low to fasten up the process.
At least 3 layers of spray, drying between coats. The spray
is also spayed where the two wings fold over each other &
allowing them to adhere to each other.
A fast drying clear nail varnish is then applied on all sides, 3 coats have been used for this process, drying between coats. The wings become see through but remain as beautiful as nature intended.
Cut a length of jewellery wire, bend the wire over the end of the pointy noise pliers & make a coil. Fabric glue is then applied to the lower corner of the wings making sure you have a L/R wing. Then the wire is put in place ( I use the tweezers to hold it there until the glue is set & the wire firm. )
Ready now for embellishing.
